Queen Aurora is the deuteragonist of the 2014 live action Disney film Maleficent and its 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. She is the daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leila, the granddaughter of King Henry and the goddaughter/adoptive daughter of Maleficent. She is also the wife of Prince Phillip.
Personality[]
Aurora is kind, gentle, sweet, innocent, and slightly naïve. She is always looking for the best in everyone and means the best of intentions. As Flittle's gift stated, she was almost always happy. She demonstrated love for her aunts, Maleficent, and Diaval. She is also brave, curious, cheerful, selfless, loving, compassionate, and forgiving.
Appearance[]
Aurora is a sixteen-year-old girl (fifteen-years-old prior to the end of the first film). She is of average height, slender, has long, blonde hair ending at her waist with a slight wave, pale skin and blue eyes. She wore several dresses during the course of the films, most notably a peasant-styled blue dress. For most of the first film, Aurora wore her hair with the sides tied in the back, and the rest was left down. She bears a striking resemblance to her birth mother, the young Queen Leila.
Story[]
Aurora is King Stefan's and Queen Leila's daughter. While she was at her Christening as an infant, Maleficent came and placed a curse on her, where although she would grow in grace and beauty as the pixies implied, she would also fall into a sleep-like death on her sixteenth birthday, having as a solution of true love's kiss after Stefan's begging for mercy. After realizing it was no longer safe to keep her on palace grounds, Stefan entrusted Knotgrass, Flittle, and Thistlewit to a remote cottage on the outskirts of the kingdom.
Maleficent[]
When Aurora was a baby, Maleficent approaches a cottage window, they see each other and Aurora smiles adoringly at Maleficent, and the dark fey tries to frighten the girl, but Aurora just continues to smile at her. Maleficent dryly hates her, calling her "Beastie" before leaving. Diaval gives her milk from a flower, as the fairies couldn’t figure out why she cried.
One day, Maleficent meets a five-year-old Aurora after saving her from falling off a cliff. The girl hugs her and reluctantly Maleficent picks Aurora up in her arms. Aurora then touches Maleficent’s horns before Maleficent sets her down again and sends her home. When Aurora turns fifteen, she spends most of her time trying to explore the forest that surrounds her cottage, but is unable because of the backbone wall. The soldiers confuse her almost for Maleficent, but Maleficent saves her by putting her in a sleeping trance. Maleficent brings her to the Moors to explore like she has always wanted, and to her surprise she is delighted to meet. Aurora claims she is her Fairy Godmother, as she noticed her shadow always looking out for her.
Over the next several days, Maleficent allows Aurora to spend more time in the Moors and introduces her to the other fairies and magical creatures. They all grow an immediate liking for Aurora and enjoy her presence in the forest. Maleficent and Aurora also begin to develop a mother and daughter like relationship. Maleficent also begins to lose her malevolence and become benevolent once again after enjoying herself when Aurora plays with the wallerbogs. Realizing that she has grown to love Aurora, Maleficent attempts to remove the curse but fails, because there is no power on Earth that can lift it, besides True Love's Kiss. Later, Aurora questions why Maleficent is the only fairy who does not fly. Reluctantly, Maleficent tells Aurora that her wings were stolen from her ,and seeing that she is distraught, Aurora attempts to comfort her, but Maleficent is inconsolable and walks away.
On the day before her sixteenth birthday, Aurora decides that she wishes to live in the Moors with Maleficent and the other fairies, maintaining this wish even after being warned by that there is evil in the world that Maleficent cannot protect her from. Nonetheless, Maleficent allows Aurora to live in the Moors, hoping that it will undo the spell since she will be far away from any spinning wheels. However, Aurora inadvertently learns about her true parentage and that Maleficent is the "evil fairy" who cursed her from the pixies. Heartbroken, Aurora runs away to her father's castle, where she reunites with Stefan. To keep her safe, Stefan locks her in her room, believing that Maleficent is coming for her revenge.
As the sun begins to set, the curse takes effect and Aurora is lured to the dungeon of the castle where she pricks her finger on the spindle of a reformed spinning wheel and falls into her eternal slumber.
Maleficent and Diaval sneak into the castle with Phillip and bring him to the sleeping Aurora, hoping his brief meeting with her will be enough to break her curse. Unfortunately, his kiss fails, and Aurora remains asleep. Maleficent sadly looks upon what her hatred has brought to her dear friend. She tearfully apologizes to her sleeping goddaughter and gives her a farewell kiss on the forehead. However, just before she can walk away, a miracle happens: Aurora wakes up. Maleficent's strong and genuine motherly love for Aurora was enough to break the curse that she herself had cast.
As they attempt to flee the castle, Maleficent is trapped under an iron net by Stefan's guards. Maleficent turns Diaval into a dragon, and he lifts the net off of her and fights the guards. However, as Stefan enters the scene, Diaval is chained by the soldiers and Maleficent is surrounded. Stefan taunts Maleficent and cruelly beats her. However, just before Stefan can kill her, Maleficent's wings return to her after Aurora frees them. With her wings back, Maleficent frees Diaval, and together, they manage to defeat the guards with the treacherous king still standing. Maleficent carries Stefan onto a tower, but just when the fairy is close to choking him to death, she decides to spare his life claiming, "It's over." However, Stefan refuses defeat and jumps on her. The two fall from the tower, but Maleficent manages to shake him off, and Stefan falls to his death.
With peace finally restored between the two kingdoms, Maleficent demolishes the wall of thorns as the barrier is no longer needed. She passes her crown to Aurora, making her Queen of both the human kingdom and the Moors, unifying the kingdoms forever. Maleficent then happily flies through the skies with Diaval by her side.
Maleficent: Mistress of All Evil[]
Five years since King Stefan's death, Aurora has reigned as Queen of the Moors, with Maleficent as its guardian and protector. Aurora is shown to be sitting on her throne in the Moors, pacing, worried while discussing about the missing fairies who were stolen from the Moors, and she was trying to figure out a way to form a union between Ulstead and the Moors. She eventually accepts Phillip's proposal, when the prince gets the courage to get down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage. Diaval informs Maleficent that Aurora has accepted Prince Phillip's hand in marriage, causing Maleficent to get angry and warn Aurora against marrying Phillip, believing that it will end up terribly, just like what happened with her and Stefan, though Aurora insists she will be proven wrong and tells him that Phillip's parents have invited them to dinner because their mother wants to meet Maleficent.
This night, Aurora arrives with Diaval and Maleficent. Both parties introduce themselves and sit down for dinner. During dinner, tensions rise between Maleficent and Queen Ingrith, and when Ingrith provokes Maleficent by dismissing her maternal bond with Aurora and claims that the marriage will make Ingrith her real mother, Maleficent loses your temper, unleashing a burst of magical energy and seemingly cursing King John, who suddenly falls into a deep slumber. Aurora doesn't believe Maleficent when she proclaims that she did not curse him. Maleficent retreats when the guards come in, but she is then hit by a projectile fired by Gerda, Ingrith's servant. Maleficent almost falls to her death but is saved by a mysterious creature with wings similar to hers.
Aurora goes to seek Maleficent from the Moors to reverse the curse but returns the next morning to the castle and tells Queen Ingrith that she has not been able to find her. Aurora is happy that the Moor denizens are invited to the royal wedding and Ingrith and her servants begin to groom Aurora to be an Ulstead noblewoman, which eventually disappoints her. Phillip sees that Aurora is a bit depressed and asks what worries her. Aurora explains that she feels differently being a noblewoman from Ulstead, as if she is no longer the Queen of the Moors. Phillip tells her that he fell in love with her for who she is, and that he doesn't want her to change. They agree to go ahead with the wedding for the king and to bring peace between the two kingdoms.
On the wedding day, Aurora finds her way into Ingrith's secret chambers. After Phillip gives her a Tomb Bloom flower, and discovers the spinning wheel. She finally discovers her connection with it and that Ingrith was the one who cursed John, not Maleficent. Aurora makes Lickspittle see the error of his ways, reminding him that Ingrith cut off his wings. Unfortunately, Ingrith herself confronts her and reveals the reason why she hates magical creatures: she believes her brother was killed by a magical creature, which caused her father, who wanted peace between magical people and humans, to be overthrown by his own people, something that led Ingrith to be exiled. Afterwards, she married King John of Ulstead, another weak king who wants peace, and now her own son has such delusions too. She then has Aurora locked up.
Aurora manages to escape, finds Phillip and tells him the truth about King John's curse, just as the Dark Feys come to attack Ulstead. The two separate and Aurora goes to free the fairies trapped in the castle chapel. Diaval comes to help her but is captured by the soldiers and at that moment Maleficent arrives in the kingdom, joins the battle to save her kind from being eradicated by the dust and transforms Diaval into a bear to fight the soldiers and free the fairies. Aurora continues to watch Malefica and realizes that she is going after Ingrith. Aurora runs to the tower where the queen is to try to stop her Godmother.
Aurora arrives just when Maleficent is prepared to kill Ingrith for her tyranny and prejudice against fairies. She apologizes for having doubted her, appeals to Maleficent's humanity to spare her, and declares that only Maleficent is her mother. With Maleficent distracted, Ingrith fires her crossbow. Maleficent saves Aurora, but is struck by the arrow, dissolving into ashes. Devastated, Aurora grieves for Maleficent, but after Aurora's tears fall on the ashes and Ingrith comes out victorious, Maleficent resurrected from her ashes and transformed into a giant phoenix. Horrified, Ingrith pushes Aurora off the cliff, distracting Maleficent to save her in order to escape.
After Maleficent saves Aurora, she reverts to her fairy form and finally gives Aurora and Phillip her blessing and allows her to marry the prince in order to unite the two kingdoms. Lickspittle decides to stop following Ingrith's orders and gives Maleficent the spindle used to curse John and, previously, Aurora. Maleficent destroys the spindle and its curse, awakening John from his slumber while Prince Phillip forms a peace pact between the fairies and humans. As she flees, Ingrith is stopped and captured by Borra and the other Dark Fey. As punishment for her crimes, Maleficent transforms Ingrith into a goat.
The next day, Maleficent flies up to Aurora and Phillip, and plans to stay for a little while longer, promising to come back for the Christening for Aurora's child.
